The mother of Navtej Sarna, Indian Ambassador to the Unites States, was beaten up by her grandson on Saturday morning.
Surjit Sarna, 86, has been admitted to a hospital.
The police have arrested Karan Dev Chopra, the son of the victim’s daughter.
In her statement, Ms. Sarna told the police that Karan, who lives with her in her Greater Kailash-II house, banged her head against the wall and beat her up after he was asked to wake up at 7:30 in the morning.
“He was sleeping in the drawing room because the air conditioner in his room wasn’t working. Mahesh, the house help, wanted to clean the area, which is why he asked Karan to get up. After Karan asked Mahesh to leave, I asked him to get up. He then got angry and started hitting me,” she reportedly told the police.
The accused, who is an advocate, has been living with his grandmother ever since he graduated from college. His mother Jaskiran Chopra got divorced when Karan was a child. She lives in Dehradun.
Accused after property
The victim also told the police that Karan had been demanding that she transfer all her property to him and was upset over her not agreeing to do so.
“My son’s [Navtej Sarna] children also live with me. Karan has been asking me to push them out and transfer the house to him,” she said.
Karan also threatened to kill her on Saturday morning, she added.
Case registered
The victim was taken to Max Hospital in Saket after her other grandchildren heard the commotion and came to her rescue.
“She has suffered injuries on her forehead, eye, legs and other parts of the body,” said the police.
A case has been registered against Karan under Sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
