Escaped under-trial prisoners nabbed again

Two under-trial prisoners including a murder accused, who had escaped from G. Udaygiri sub-jail in Kandhamal district of Odisha on March 29, were nabbed again.

According to Gopabandhu Mallik, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of prisons, Berhampur range, the murder accused, Pankaj Digal, was arrested from Phiringia police station area of Kandhamal district on Sunday. The other fugitive, Suresh Naik, surrendered before court at G. Udaygiri on Monday and he was arrested.

Pankaj had been arrested in November 2015 in a murder case and Suresh was arrested on March 18 this year in a theft case. Both of them had allegedly jumped over the boundary wall of the sub-jail on March 29 evening and escaped.

Meanwhile, prison authorities have suspended two jail officials on charges of negligence in duty. The officials are head warder Balakrushna Mallik and another warder Sushant Kumar Dehuri. Senior superintendent of Berhampur circle jail, Raghunath Majhi, had made an on the spot enquiry into this incident.
