The Delhi Government will allocate an additional grant of Rs.5 crore to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to improve the state of night shelters here.
The allocation was cleared by Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday after a review of the conditions of night shelters and taking stock of reports submitted by the Health Department, DUSIB, Delhi Police and Deputy Commissioners.
Mr. Jung also instructed that two blankets per person be made available by the DUSIB in all night shelters.
Family night shelters will also be set up in locations where homeless families are staying and senior officials have been instructed to conduct inspections routinely to check the conditions at these places.
The Delhi Police have helped move approximately 250 people into night shelters in the trans-Yamuna area as these were running below capacity.
Officials said that the DUSIB has added one more night shelter and will add two more porta cabins, taking the total strength of night shelters in the city to 224.
PTI adds:
The information regarding augmentation required at specific night shelters was shared by the Deputy Commissioners with the DUSIB in a recent review meeting.
The number of cleaning staff at night shelters has been doubled and action initiated against non-government organisations found lacking.
Further, as per the L-G’s instructions, 10 community halls of the Delhi Development Authority located in Dwarka, Rohini, Narela, Masoodpur and Kondli will be converted to night shelters.
