Delhi University goes to the polls on Friday to elect a new students’ union.
The Bharatiya Janata Party-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which won every post except that of the president, is fielding Buddhist Studies student Ankit Dhananjay Chaudhary for the post of president, Hans Raj College student Gaurav Chaudhary for vice-president, Ritu Bhagini Nivedita College student Ritu Rana for secretary and Law Faculty student Vishu Basoya for joint secretary.
The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has fielded second-year law student Arun Hooda as its presidential candidate. First-year law student Varun Khari has been fielded for the post of vice-president, first-year BA. (Programme) student Varun Chaudhary has been fielded for the secretary’s post and BA (Honours) student Raveena Choudhary has been fielded for joint secretary.
Extensive security arrangements have been made, especially from the road leading from Chatra Marg to Law Faculty, where the most votes are cast year after year.
“There are 50 centres where a candidate can cast his/ her vote for the DUSU. We will be using 984 electronic machines,” said Chief Election Officer C.S. Dubey.
Voting will start at 8.30 a.m. and end at 12.30 p.m. for morning classes. Voting for evening classes will begin at 3 p.m. and will end at 7 p.m.
