Three men, including a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) driver, have been arrested for allegedly robbing Rs.9 lakh from the cash counter of the Millennium DTC Bus Depot in South Delhi earlier this month. A cashier was also attacked during the robbery.

According to police, the arrested men have been identified as Deepak, who works as a DTC driver at the depot, Arvind Kumar alias Bablu and Anil Kumar. A country made pistol, Rs.1.90 lakh in cash, a paper cutter, a Yamaha motorcycle and mobile phones which were used in the commission of crime have been recovered from the possession of the accused.

The case, which was being investigated by the South-East District, was later handed over to the Special Cell. According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, on the intervening night of July 14 and 15, Vikram was performing his duty as an assistant cashier with one Mahipal Singh at the cash counter.

“At about 3-45 a.m., four to five persons forced him to open the door of the cash room at gunpoint. The robbers then barged into the room and injured him to force him to submit. They robbed Rs.9 lakh cash,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

The Special Cell visited the spot and learnt that the entry into the depot was not restricted and the cash room was far away from the gate, which aroused the suspicion of an insider being involved in the robbery.

On Wednesday, the police were tipped-off that two of the robbers, Arvind and Anil, were involved in the said crime. They learnt that the two robbers would come to Wazirabad road crossing on a motorcycle at about 11 a.m. on that day to meet one of their associates. At 11-10 a.m., two persons came on a black Yamaha motorcycle there and were apprehended by a police team who were waiting for them there.

“Deepak was arrested later at the assistance of the two accused men and Rs. 20,000 was recovered from his house,” the officer added.

He told the police that he is a DTC driver and works at the Millennium DTC bus depot. “He observed that the security at the bus depot was lax and the entry not restricted, and planned to commit a robbery with his acquaintances Anil and Arvind,” said Mr. Yadav.
