The Delhi Congress expelled 20 party members, including 15 who had fought the civic elections in April as Independents, for six years on Wednesday.

‘Working against party’

At a meeting of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee’s disciplinary committee, as many as 15 ‘rebel candidates’ were unanimously expelled from the primary membership of the party for working against it. Apart from the 15 candidates who fought against the party’s official nominees, the husbands of five of the rebel candidates were also expelled. Among those expelled were Congress block committee president for Yamuna Vihar, Shyam Singh Rawat, and his wife Savita Rawat, who contested in the Ghonda ward as an Independent.

For the April 23 civic polls, the Congress had devised a new way of selecting candidates. Applications were invited and the support by party workers for prospective candidates was considered. As a result, many senior leaders and workers were unhappy.
