The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Union Government, the Delhi Government and Hutchison Essar Mobile Services Limited on a petition by a man seeking a direction to stop installation of mobile towers on residential buildings and at public places, submitting that the radiation emitted by them was carcinogenic and his son had recently died due to it.
Seeking a compensation of Rs.50 lakh for the death of his son due to cancer caused by the radio frequency wave emitted by the tower installed on the roof of his house, the petitioner, Ramnath Garg, also sought a direction to ban installation of these towers within 50-metre circumference of residential premises, hospitals, offices and schools.
Mr. Garg further submitted that an inter-ministerial committee had also recommended against installation of these towers on residential premises and at public places.
He said that despite persistent requests to the mobile company for removal of the tower from his residence, it was not removed.
He stated that now his wife had also taken ill due to the mobile tower radiation installed on his residential premises and his neighbours were also feeling unwell due it.
The petitioner also demanded fixing of specific emission level for these towers on the lines of other countries. He said that the inter-ministerial committee had also recommended reduction of exposure level to radiation from these towers to 450 microwaves per square metre but it had not been implemented.
The radiation also caused swelling in the brain, hearing disorder and anxiety neurosis, the petitioner said, adding that when he got the radiation level at his house measured by experts, it was found that the terrace was in the danger zone with very high radiation while entire house was found to be in caution zone.
Issuing the notices on the petition, Justice Rajiv Shakdher directed the respondents to file replies to the petition by January 13, 2014.
