Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said the Delhi Government has constituted a senior citizens council to monitor the status of various schemes for the aged.

Speaking at the inauguration of a State-level workshop-cum-consultative meet on “Empowering Elderly” organised by the Department of Social Welfare and NGO “Anugraha”, Ms. Dikshit said every senior citizen had the right to live with dignity and she informed that her Government has been offering the highest pension of Rs.1,000 per month to the aged in the country.

Besides, the Chief Minister said a number of old age care homes and recreation centres have been opened, senior citizens have been provided concessions in the Delhi Transport Corporation buses and special arrangements have been put in place for them in the Delhi Government hospitals.

The workshop had been organised to increase public awareness and knowledge about the rights of older persons, disseminate information and generate awareness on different schemes related to the senior citizens and to help the senior citizens share their experiences about the recreation centres.
