: Contractual teachers on Saturday staged a protest outside Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s house against their termination under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme.
The services of 1,920 teachers, who were employed under the SSA scheme, were terminated on March 31, allegedly due to the discontinuation of the posts by the Human Resource Development Ministry.
The Delhi government, however, had told the teachers that they would be allowed to serve as guest teachers.
While the contracts of these teachers used to be extended from March 31 to May 10 every year, it was not done this time. Teachers are appointed under the SSA scheme to meet the required teacher student ratio of 1:40, as mandated by the Right to Education Act, 2009.
“As per government policy, the salaries under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan will be stopped, as we have started recruitment process on vacant posts of teachers. So, they cannot serve under SSA. I appeal to them to serve as guest teachers,” Mr. Sisodia had said on the sidelines of a government event.
The teachers protesting outside Mr. Sisodia’s house on Saturday raised slogans against the government. Some of them were also detained by the police.
“The protesters were demanding permanent employment as teachers. Some 100 of them were taken to the Tilak Marg police station, and were later let off,” a Delhi Police official said.
