This Navratra, polio survivors from Delhi will get a fresh lease of life, courtesy the Narayan Seva Sansthan. This Udaipur-based non-government organisation will operate upon 201 girls free of cost.
The operations will be conducted at Agarwal Bhawan in East Punjabi Bagh during an eight-day long surgical camp, which will be held daily from 10-30 a.m.
Corrective surgeriesDevender Choubasi, a trustee of the NGO, said: “ On the day of the inauguration, we will run an OPD in which largely young girls will be diagnosed. Since polio can never be cured 100 per cent, we will do ‘corrective surgery’ for cases in which one leg is longer or shorter than the other, or if there is a major limp.”
Out of the four halls at Agarwal Bhawan, one will be converted into an operation theatre and the remaining will be used as wards for pre and post-operative care. A team of 70 doctors and technicians will be part of the camp.
“We will conduct operation only for two to three days because the patient will have to stay with us for five days for post-operative care. Most operated people will have to come back to us after 40 days. For all these days, they will be on medications and exercises before they finally wear calipers that we will provide them with free of cost when we will visit again with our team of experts,” said Dr. Choubasi.
Normally, one such operation costs Rs.8,000 with medication, but collectively the costs come down to Rs.5,000 per person.
