A 16-year-old boy drowned after falling into a drain in southwest Delhi’s Chhawla on Monday afternoon, though police suspect foul play in the incident.

A PCR call was received around 3.25p.m. informing us that a boy was crying for help after falling into a drain, said a senior police officer. The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Mandeep.

Friends under lens

Mandeep was taken out of the drain and rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, said the officer.

During investigations, it emerged that Mandeep had left home for school in the morning, with three to four of his friends. However, when police reached the ‘accident’ site, his friends weren’t present at the spot.

Mandeep’s chest had a puncture wound that could have been sustained due to a compass or a thorn, said the officer, adding that they were awaiting the post mortem report. “The activities of his friends are under suspicion,” he added.

A murder case has been registered since there appears to be some sort of foul play, the police said.

Quarrel turned ugly?

Police have detained his friends for questioning.

They are being quizzed as to whether a quarrel took place between the friends and in a fit of rage they attacked Mandeep or pushed him into the drain, the officer said.

Mandeep is a student of Veda Vyasa DAV Public School.
