Bharatiya Janata Party’s Krishan Pal Gurjar won the election from the Faridabad Parliamentary constituency with a huge margin of over 4.6 lakh votes, the highest for any Lok Sabha seat in Haryana.
Mr. Gurjar polled a whopping 6.5 lakh votes while his nearest rival and Congress MP Avtar Singh Bhadana bagged just over 1.8 lakh. Eminent lawyer and Indian National Lok Dal leader R.K. Anand finished third with over 1.3 lakh votes. Aam Aadmi Party’s Purshotam Dagar, a Jat leader, managed to get little over 67,000 votes and finished fourth. The AAP seemed to have fail to cash in on its national convener Arvind Kejriwal’s road show in Faridabad and Gurgaon for two days in support of its leaders.
Mr. Gurjar, who appeared confident about his victory, had entered the electoral politics by winning the election to corporation in 1994. Mr. Gurjar contested the Haryana Vidhan Sabha election in 1996 and was elected MLA from Mevla Maharajpur constituency. In 2009, the BJP assigned him the post of the State president and fought elections under his leadership.
While history favoured the Congress, which had won six out of 10 elections, Mr. Gurjar, riding on the Modi wave, managed to cash in on anti-incumbency against the sitting MP and corruption charges against the Hooda Government to wrest the seat.
