A man employed as a waiter at a banquet hall in North Delhi died when he suffered a gunshot injury due to alleged accidental firing by his colleague early on Wednesday morning, the police said.
The suspect, Ram Dayal, claimed he had not pointed the weapon at the victim, Kailash, deliberately, and that it went off while he was playing around with it. The police said the incident was being investigated from all angles.
The single-barrel gun belongs to Jitender (45), a security guard employed at a banquet hall in Model Town. He fled after informing the banquet hall owner about the incident.
“We received a call about the incident from one of the employees at the Gujranwala Banquet Hall around 3 a.m. A team reached the spot and was led to the terrace where Kailash was found lying in a pool of blood,” said a senior police officer. Initial medical examination revealed that Kailash had sustained a single gunshot wound to his head. The body was sent to a mortuaryand his family in Bihar informed of the incident. The accused waiter, Dayal, was apprehended from the banquet hall.
Dayal told the police that he had taken the gun from its owner, Jitender, for entertainment. He, Jitender and Kailash were seated at the banquet hall terrace at the time of the incident.
Dayal claimed that he was playfully pointing the gun towards Kailash and that both were having fun when it suddenly went off.
Jitender was in the toilet at the time and rushed out only after hearing the sound of the gunshot.
“Footage of the CCTV cameras across the campus of the banquet hall as well as its vicinity is being analysed for clues,” the officer said.
