Bangladesh assures more security along Tripura border

January 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:48 am IST - Agartala:

Bangladesh would augment strength of its border force in Chittagong hill tracts bordering Tripura to prevent smuggling of contraband drugs and cross border movement of the extremists. It assured to set up more border outposts (BOPs) in the hills which have long been lacking proper surveillance and security cover.

“Several decisions were adopted in the just-concluded District Magistrate-level meeting attended by the heads of nine districts of Bangladesh and Tripura. One of the 30 issues discussed was breach of border security by extremists and the criminals,” a senior police official told The Hindu on Sunday.

Besides the Deputy Commissioners of Bangladesh and District Magistrates of Tripura, police, Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guards, Bangladesh, (BGB), officials attended the two-day annual conclave in Agartala. Several district to district level memorandums were signed at the meet.

Tripura civil and security officials raised the issue of security in areas of Dhalai district bordering Chittagong hill tracts. Extremists owing allegiance to the National Liberation Front of Tripura intensified activities in the district in recent months with attacks on the BSF and holding kidnapped people to ransom across unfenced border.
