The main grade separator being constructed along GT Road at Apsara border in North-East Delhi was on Friday through open to traffic by Delhi Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan.

Speaking at the inauguration of the flyover that would provide motorists coming from Sahibabad in Ghaziabad a direct entry into Delhi, Mr. Chauhan said the three layer grade separator being built at GT Road Junction would cost Rs.226.47 crore. He said GT Road caters to large volume of traffic moving from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Uttar Pradesh and vice versa and so the construction of the main flyover on GT Road would provide immense relief to the travelling public.

The Minister informed that the main flyover is 645-metres long and about 200 metre out of this is in U.P. He said the project also involves construction of two vehicular underpass along Road No.62 and No.56 in Delhi to provide uninterrupted access to traffic moving from Dilshad Garden to ISBT Anand Vihar and vice versa. This 860-metre-long underpass would go below the Delhi-Ghaziabad railway line and for this push boxes have been proposed under the railway line. The Minister said 85 per cent of the work on this project has been completed and while the main flyover has been opened to traffic, the two underpasses would be completed by June 2010.

The Minister also directed the Railways and PWD officials to resolve critical issues relating to land acquisition, tree cutting and traffic diversion for ensuring timely completion of the project.

During the day, Mr. Chauhan also inspected the construction of the grade separator at Shyamlal College. The project costing Rs.66 crore involves construction of a 575-metre flyover along G.T. Road with dual carriageway of nine metre width and three lanes in each direction. The flyover would have a composite steel super structure construction with pre-fabricated steel girders. As part of this project a four-lane 278-metre-long underpass from Road No. 57 to No.65 would also be constructed.
