A local court here on Wednesday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for throwing acid on a woman and her minor daughter two years ago. It also directed that 60 per cent of the total wages earned by the convicts during their jail term be given to the victim every six months for her rehabilitation.
‘Pay up or more fine’
Fine One of the accused in the case has been acquitted. Pronoucing the sentence, Additional District and Sessions Judge Vivek Singal sentenced the convicts — Raja and Azad — to life imprisonment for offences under Section 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and under section 326 (A) (acid throwing) of the Indian Penal Code. The judge also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the two convicts for throwing acid and ordered an additional two years in jail if they failed to pay the amount.
‘Exemplary verdict’
Advocate Anju Rawat of non-government organisation Farishtey Group, who represented the victim pro bono in the case, said: “It is an exemplary verdict,”.
On December 15, 2014, an unidentified person had barged inside a house in Dharam colony in Palam Vihar and thrown acid on the woman. In the attack, the woman's nine-year-old daughter also suffered burns. The Gurugram Police later arrested three persons — Raja, Azad and Arif — in this case.
