Family members of Sompal grieving outside the Adarsh Nagar police station in New Delhi on Sunday.

A 25-year-old man first fell to his death under mysterious circumstances from the terrace of the Adarsh Nagar Police station and then policemen allegedly dumped his body elsewhere to pass it off as an unidentified corpse.

The Station House Officer and four constables have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and placed under suspension. An Assistant Sub-Inspector has also been suspended.

The deceased has been identified as Sompal. His family says he sold fruits at the Azadpur market.

According to the police, the incident took place on December 28 when they responded to a PCR call about a quarrel. Sompal was detained and brought to the police station for questioning.

“The accused claim that he was left unsupervised for a few minutes when he rushed to the terrace and jumped. We are verifying it,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere said.

Whether there was foul play in the death itself or his action was a result of torture is being investigated.

The FIR, based on the complaint of a sub-inspector, says the body was dumped at Shah Alam Bandh Road by Inspector Sanjay Kumar (SHO) and four constables.
