A girl, who was studying in a private college in Bhubaneswar, committed suicide by hanging herself after reportedly finding that she secured second division as against her expectation of above 80 per cent marks.
Many students and parents alleged that teachers evaluated answer sheets miserly as a result of which students obtained marks less than their expectations. They said teachers’ strike during the evaluation process had badly impacted marks. The low scoring would hamper the prospects of getting admission in top-ranked colleges.
Mr. Panigrahi said 20,191 students, (29.69 per cent), secured first division while 7,208 were found have obtained above 70 per cent.
Pass percentage in science stream in 2016 is marginally better compared to results of 2015 when 80.31 per cent candidates had been successful.
As far as district-wise performance is concerned, Nayagarh topped the list with 94.23 per cent of total candidates found to have passed their examination. Only 53.87 per cent of students in Jharsuguda district were successful. There are five such colleges from where not a single student could pass the examination.
