A 57-year-old woman has delivered twin girls at Maharaja Agrasen Hospital here, making it a rare case where a woman has managed to give birth after the natural age of conception.
The woman gave birth on Thursday morning and the newborns, weighing 1.44 kg and 2.16 kg, are out of danger and doing well.
Speaking about the case, Veena Gupta, senior consultant, obstetrics and gynaecology, Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, noted: “The couple had undergone fertility treatment [IVF] elsewhere and the woman was brought here for delivery. She was a high-risk patient.”
High blood pressure
Stating that the woman probably conceived using donor eggs, Dr. Gupta said the patient came in with complications of high blood pressure and heart disease, adding to the fact that she was at an advanced age for giving birth.
“The newborns are doing well now but we counselled the couple about the risk they undertook with these births and the fact that having children at such an advanced age may not be in the best interest of the children,” she said.
The patient is currently being monitored by a panel of doctors.
The couple reportedly had a miscarriage in 2009 and have been trying to conceive since.
