Heavy rain in forest areas in the district have resulted in three reservoirs filling up, prompting authorities to evacuate people in low lying areas to safer places.

More than 20 houses were damaged in the rain fury, officials said.

Gunderipallam and Perumpallam reservoirs were full with the areas receiving 147 mm and 226 mm yesterday. The Varattupallam dam was also overflowing. The surplus water has been discharged to various tanks and ponds in the area.

People in low lying areas have been shifted to safer places.

In addition to this due to heavy rain in Kadirampatty, the Perumpallam ‘odai’(canal) running through the heart of Erode town was also flooded.

On Sunday midnight and Monday early morning there was 113 mm of rain in Perumpallam and 53 mm in Gunderipallam, officials said, adding, the rain will continue for another two or three days.
