The Coimbatore Corporation will soon develop six model roads in the city. Consultants will be asked to prepare the plans.
According to sources, these are NSR Road, Masakalipalayam Road, Sanganoor Road, Race Course, T.V. Samy Road, and D.B. Road.
A model road will have better facilities for walking, and cycling, have vending spaces, bus stops, and street furniture.
In redesigning the streets, the corporation will take data from land use survey, and take into account the economic activity of the area by assessing the number of shops, cinemas, and houses among others.
It will consider the accident data as well.
The sources add that the needs of those with special needs will also be factored in.
For instance, the pedestrian pathway will be 2m wide and 150 mm high., They will be continuous and integrated with landscaping.
Once the proposals are ready, a design committee will review them and then finalise the plan for implementation.
