Pumping of five million litres of water a day from Pilloor through the newly-laid pipelines under the Pilloor-II scheme will begin from Friday to clean pipelines, said T.K. Ponnusamy, Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation on Thursday.
The works under the second phase cost Rs 113.74 crore. Laying of 1,500 mm diameter pipelines for 36 km was almost complete, Mr. Ponnusamy told The Hindu . ' The Board has also promised to provide 20 mld of water to the city during summer and crisis period.
The water to be released now would remove the bio-degradable waste and construction materials along the pipeline, Mr. Ponnusamy said.
Only after the quality of water is assessed as potable, distribution for public consumption would begin, he said.
The water used to clean the pipelines would be released to dry and defunct natural water bodies or pits, he added.
Now Siruvani water supply scheme was providing 84.15 mld and Pilloor-I 65 mld. Pilloor-II would bring an additional 65 mld of water.
The commissioning of Pilloor-II would help ease drinking water problems in North and East Zones of Coimbatore city. East Zone get water only once in seven or ten days at present.
