Clogging of old sewer lines in and around VOC Park and Nehru Stadium besides eateries encroaching on the road space trouble Dr. Munuswamy Garden area residents.

Every now and then the residents of Dr. Munuswamy Garden call up Coimbatore Corporation officials to clean the choked sewer line.

Invariably, their calls are after weekends when the line gets clogged due to dumping of solid waste into the sewer lines by eateries and shops in and around the VOC Park and Nehru Stadium, the residents say. They say they have been complaining about this for a long time, since 2013, but without relief.

Of late, the problem had turned for the worse in that the sewer line gets choked twice a week. And, whenever the Corporation staff removed the waste they could fine disposable cups, plastic spoons, bones, and items usually used in eateries.

R. Govindarajulu, a resident, said the Corporation should either change the gradient of the sewer line in such a way that the sewage flows away from the area, to the north or replace the existing pipelines with wider ones to prevent clogging.

Pointing to the work under way near the stadium, he said that the Corporation should extend the work to Dr. Munuswamy Garden as well.

The area had nearly 40 houses, including an apartment with 16 flats.

Jinesh Jain, another resident, said what troubled them the most was the eateries encroaching upon the road leading to the locality to place tables and chairs to serve their customers. In the evenings, driving in and out was a nightmare and more so at weekends when the business soars.

Mr. Govindarajulu said the Corporation did act once against the violators but they were soon back in action.

Sources familiar with the issue said that efforts were on to replace the sewer line by extending the on-going work.

If the efforts bear fruition, the Corporation would soon prepare a fresh estimate to take up the work so as to provide a permanent solution to the residents.
