Nominations filed for local body elections in Coimbatore district

Last date for campaigning is September 16; elections to be held on September 18

A total of 145 nominations have been filed for local body elections to 39 posts in Coimbatore district. Thursday was the last day for filing nominations.

This included 29 nominations filed for the Coimbatore Mayor election, according to an official release.

Among rural areas the maximum number of nominations filed was for the post of President of Irugur Town Panchayat, for which 12 nominations were filed.

Four wards at Anamalai Panchayat Union received a total of ten nominations.

Last date

The three vacant wards at Karamadai Panchayat Union received nine nominations.

No nominations were received for elections to the post of Veerapandi Town Panchayat Ward No: 14 and a ward at Sirumugai Town Panchayat.

Last date for campaigning for the elections was September 16 and the elections would be held on September 18.

Seven persons have filed their nomination for the post of Chairman, Coonoor Municipal Council.

The seat fell vacant following the incumbent C.Gopalakrishnan (AIADMK) contesting the elections to the Nilgiris Parliamentary constituency and emerging victorious. Among those who have filed their papers are D.Saravanakumar (AIADMK),Padmanathan (BJP) and an advocate Ramachandran (Ind).

According to official sources one nomination has been filed for ward number three of the Nelliyalam municipality,two for ward number one of the Kil Kundah Town panchayat,two for ward number seven of the Kil Kundah Town panchayat,two for ward number one of the Adhigaratty Town panchayat,four for ward number six of the Hullikal Town panchayat,two for ward number eight of the Kotagiri panchayat union,six for ward number three of the Gudalur panchayat union,one for ward number two of the Thumanhatty panchayat,one for ward number five of Thuneri panchayat,one for ward number two of the Balacola panchayat,one for ward number 11 of the Kengarai panchayat,one for ward number one of the Kengarai panchayat and seven for ward number nine of the Naduhatty panchayat.

Filing of nominations in the by-elections to various posts in different civic bodies ended here on Thursday with many major political parties fielding their candidates for the respective posts.

Since Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) had forged an alliance in the district, CPI had fielded T. N. Nagarajan for the contest to select Ward 45 councillor in Tirupur Corporation while CPI (M) chose R. Velusamy as the candidate for elections in Corporation Ward 22.

Of the other parties, BJP had put R. Gunaseakaran and S. Sivakumar and AIADMK had nominated Gopal Swamy and Kannappan as their nominees for the elections to the Corporation Ward 22 and 45, respectively.

Indian Union Muslim League would be contesting in the Ward 45 elections with Syed Musthafa chosen as the party candidate.

In the elections to the post of Thirumuruganpoondi Town panchayat chairman, the CPI had gone with P. Ramasamy, who was the chairman during 1996-2001.

AIADMK and BJP had fielded R. Palanisamy and A. K. Shanmugam, respectively.

Likewise, AIADMK, BJP and CPI (M) candidates, P. Palanisamy, Muthu Kumar and M. M. Veerappan, had filed their nominations for the post of chairman in Madathukulam town panchayat.

In the ward six, elections in Palladam municipality, the CPI (M) had chosen S. Shantamani as their nominee while AIADMK and BJP went with P. Ramakrishnan and Chandra as the candidates.
