Medical quota: Madurai Bench also quashes G.O.

Allows batch of petitions against it

Close on the heels of a similar judgment by the principal seat of the Madras High Court in Chennai, the Madurai Bench on Tuesday quashed a Government Order (G.O.) issued by the State Health and Family Welfare Department on June 22, apportioning 85% of MBBS/BDS seats in government as well as private medical colleges to State Board students and the rest to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) students.

Justice K. Ravichandrabaabu had quashed the G.O. last week, while allowing a batch of 60 writ petitions filed by CBSE students challenging the order on the ground that it was arbitrary.

In view of that judgment, Justice K. Kalyanasundaram also allowed a batch of three writ petitions filed here, challenging the same G.O.

State files appeal

Meanwhile, the government has taken the matter on appeal before a Division Bench of the High Court.
