Larsen and Toubro formally launched two integrated community development projects here on Thursday.

According to a release from the company, one of the projects was launched at Madukkarai block covering 2,028 hectares and the other at Sulur block covering an area of 1,585 hectares, as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The company has partnered with a non-governmental organisation National Agro Foundation (NAF) in Tamil Nadu for project execution.

Positive impact

The District Rural Development Project Director Tha Murugan launched the projects, which are expected to leave a positive impact in the lives of nearly 17,000 people.

A spokesperson of the company said that the locations identified in Coimbatore district are highly water-stressed with groundwater levels declining at an alarming rate.

Accordingly, implementation of the project will begin with interventions in the area of watershed development and community awareness on water conservation that will be followed by sanitation, education, healthcare and skill development that are critical for community development.

Estimating that it would take about three-and-a-half years for completion of the project, he said that that the expected outcome is aimed at ensuring alleviation of poverty, community awareness on civic issues and increase the participation of women in decision-making process for the overall empowerment of the society.
