As part of the energy saving process initiated by Railways, Palakkad division has replaced incandescent lamps with Compact Fluorescent Lamps in all its residential quarters, coming under the division from Mangalore Central in Karnataka to Madukarai in Tamil Nadu.

Four CFLs were distributed to each quarter and a total of about 9,000 CFLs replaced free of cost, an official release said on Saturday.

Around 13,500 units of electric energy per month can be saved due to this, since the lamps were provided for high usage areas like living room, kitchen, bedroom and dining room to give maximum benefit.

The CFLs are manufactured by Philips with a life of 10,000 burning hours, the release said.
