A herd of 19 elephants damaged three houses on the Valparai TANTEA Estate, over 135 km from Coimbatore, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Officials of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve’s Manampalli Range, which covers the area, said the herd passed through the TANTEA Estate around 2.30 a.m., damaging the front portions of the three houses. No one was injured as residents were sleeping. The herd also damaged a couple of houses in a nearby estate.

Forest Department personnel have driven the herd five km from the TANTEA Estate. Its movement was being watched. Officials said the houses were close to the elephant corridor.

The movement of two more herds in the area was being tracked.

A herd of eight elephants was spotted near Injiparai. It was in the same location on Tuesday night.

Another herd of 10 elephants was spotted on the Sangli Road

Forest Department officials said the herds had come down from Kerala.
