‘Coimbatore in need of metro train, not mono rail’

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) has urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to announce metro train scheme for Coimbatore, saying the mono rail scheme he promised to implement would not suit the city.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, MDMK’s State Youth Wing Secretary V. Eswaran said that media had quoted him saying that the State Government would take steps to implement the city’s long-cherished dream for mono rail.

On the contrary, city was in need of metro train, not mono rail. The latter would better suit a pilgrimage town and not be much of a use for transporting more commuters. Mono rail would also not suit a city that was seeing an exponential growth in population. If the Government were to go ahead and implement the scheme, it would be a waste of public money.

E. Sreedharan, who implemented the Delhi metro project, had during his visit to Coimbatore suggested that metro would better suit the city. Therefore, the Government would do well to reconsider its decision and implement a metro train project for the city.
