Hundreds of residents of Chinnavedampatti (Ward 42) staged a demonstration at the Coimbatore Collectorate during the public grievances redress meeting on Monday against a Corporation proposal for a dumpyard there.

In a petition submitted to District Collector Archana Patnaik, C.S. Subramaniam, one of the residents, said that the civic body proposed to create a dump yard to process the 20 tonnes of waste collected daily.

A resolution to this effect was passed during a council meeting held on December 22.

Such a move would adversely affect the Chinnavedampatti Pond, which provided drinking water to the area.

It would affect the 1,500 families residing in the area, the petition said.

Tuition fee

A group of Sree Narayana Guru College students belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes have requested the district administration to take steps for waiving the tuition fees.

In a petition, the students said that they hailed from economically weak families and were unable to afford the fees.

Gita class

The Indu Makkal Katchi (Tamil Nadu) has urged the State Government to make classes on Hindu scriptures and religious books such as Bhagavad Gita compulsory in all government and private educational institutions.

The party submitted a petition to the district administration on Monday.

‘Stop construction’

A group of residents from Sri Devi Nagar, near Kavundampalayam, have urged the district administration to stop the construction of a religious school and a place of worship in the locality.

In the petition, ‘Puratchi’ Siva, a resident, said that the institution could cause communal tension in the area.

‘Protect cows’

Members of the Bharat Sena have urged the district administration to prevent illegal transport of cows to Kerala.

In a petition, R. Senthil Kannan, State general secretary of the organisation, alleged that cows were being illegally transported from all parts of the State to Kerala through Coimbatore and Pollachi.

He called for legal action against those indulged in this illegal trade.
