Case registered against seven persons for vandalising car

The Karumathampatti police have registered cases against seven persons in connection with the vandalism of a car belonging to a power loom owner during a death anniversary procession at Somanur on Friday. Several shops at Karumathampatti and Somanur remained closed on Saturday after traders and shop keepers called for a strike condemning the attack.

P. Rameshkumar (40), a resident of Indira Colony near Sedarpalayam, was allegedly attacked by members of VCK in a procession conducted by the latter to commemorate the 18th death anniversary of Dalit activist Segudanthali Murugesan. The attack occurred when procession consisting two vans, 20 cars and 18 two-wheelers was proceeding from four road junction at Karumathampatti to Somanur around 2 p.m. on Friday. As the procession reached Pooladadu Pirivu, the cadre had an altercation with Rameshkumar, who had come from the opposite direction in his car. The cadre allegedly attacked Rameshkumar and damaged his car using stones and wooden logs. Rameshkumar, who sustained injuries in the attack, was later admitted at a private hospital at Sulur.

The seven booked in connection with the case are Kaniyamuthan, state deputy secretary of VCK, Pala Shanmugam, parliamentary secretary of VCK in Tirupur, A.K.R Moorthy, Ramesh, Palanisamy, Ramkumar and Antony Samy.

ATM theft attempt

Unidentified persons attempted to steal cash from an ATM belonging to Indian Overseas Bank on Dr. Nanjappa Road in the early hours of Saturday. The police said that two men, who covered their face with mask, had entered the ATM around 2 a.m. and damaged the teller machine using hammer and other tools. The theft was averted by a security guard of an adjacent building who heard sounds from the ATM kiosk. Sensing danger, the burglars fled the spot leaving tools and gloves. After getting alert, the police rushed to the spot. Later the scientific team of the police and dog squad was employed on the spot.

12 injured in accident

Twelve persons were injured when a TNSTC bus from Salem to Gudalur collided with a lorry on Mettupalayam-Annur Road in the early hours of Saturday. The accident occurred near New Market. All the injured are passengers of the bus who were given treatment at Mettuplayam Government Hospital. The Sirumugai police have registered a case.
