N. Karthik, MLA, has urged the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan to cancel the appointment of R. Suganya as the Chief Executive Officer of the agency that manages the Smart City project.

In a letter to the Commissioner, the MLA belonging to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, said that the appointment of the 28-year-old who seemed to lack the necessary experience, that too after relaxing the eligibility criteria, showed the extent to which the ruling party interfered in the civic body’s functioning.

Ms. Suganya is the daughter of former AIADMK MLA K.P. Raju.

The appointment had shocked and troubled the city’s residents, who saw it as a violation of the Central Government’s rules that clearly wanted no political interference in the implementation of Smart City programme.

Coimbatore had many citizens with experience in varied fields who would have easily filled in the CEO’s shoes, even when the eligibility norms for experience were set at the higher 15 years. But deliberately the State Government tweaked the norms to favour members of the ruling party, Mr. Karthik reiterated and sought the cancellation of the appointment.

If Ms. Suganya were allowed to continue, it would impair the implementation of the scheme, he warned.
