95 bird species sighted during survey in Tirupur

As many as 95 bird species - both migratory and native birds - were sighted during a survey carried out by the Forest Department officials and Nature Society of Tirupur volunteers in marshes and swamps in Tirupur.

The survey focussed mainly on the bird habitats in and around S. Periyapalayam irrigation tank and Upparu dam, which have the largest congregation of birds. “During the survey, 70 bird species (21 migratory and 49 native bird species) were sighted at S. Periyapalayam tank area.

“Similarly, 52 species (16 migratory and 36 native bird species ) were sighted at Upparu dam area. Among them, 37 species were common in the two habitats,” said Nature Society of Tirupur president K. Ravindran.

The data would be used for chalking out conservation measures in the future, sources here said.
