As many as eight government buildings would become differently-abled friendly in Coimbatore districts by the end of September this year under the Accessible India Campaign (AIC) of the Union Government.
P. Chandrasekar, District Differently-abled Welfare Officer, told The Hindu that 24 buildings were assessed for the purpose of implementing the facilities for the differently-abled under the AIC by PWD officials during the financial year 2016-17.
The estimate for providing differently-abled friendly facilities include railings on ramps, Braille sign boards, specially modified toilets, lowering drinking water taps, accessibility of wheel chairs and lowering the height of tables.
The proposals along with the estimates prepared by the PWD officials were forwarded by the District Differently-abled Welfare Office to the Commissioner of Differently-abled for forwarding the same to the Centre.
A few buildings which were identified for implementing under the AIC scheme in Coimbatore were Income-Tax office, Government College of Technology, BDO office in Madukkarai, Forest office adjacent to BDO office in Madukkarai, Pollution Control Board, New Collectorate building, BDO Offices in Periyanayakkanpalayam and Perur and Coimbatore Railway junction, Mr. Chandrasekar said.
The AIC was launched by the Centre two years ago.
