Fifty eight-and-a-half sovereigns gold jewellery that was kept in a house at Kuniyamuthur was reportedly found missing.

The police said that P. Venkataraman (56), of Srinivasapuram in Thanjavur, came to the house of his brother-in-law Devarajan at Kuniyamuthur on Wednesday afternoon. It is learnt that he had brought 58.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery with him to buy new jewellery for his daughter’s wedding that is scheduled for next month.

On Wednesday night, Venkataraman left the jewellery on a table and the next morning the jewellery was reportedly missing. The police said that there were six relatives in the house that night and suspected that one of them could have taken the jewellery as chances of someone else taking it away seemed to be remote. A case was registered under section 380 (theft in a dwelling place) of the Indian Penal Code on Saturday and a special team of the Kuniyamuthur Police was investigating the case.
