The city police have seized 539 liquor bottles worth ₹2.16 lakh being smuggled in a car and autorickshaw at Gudukallur on the Salem – Attur highway in the early hours of the day and arrested two persons.
A police party from Ammapettai police station, led by J. Nagarajan, Inspector of Police, was conducting surprise check of vehicles near the Vediappan Temple in Gundukallur, when they spotted a car and an autorickshaw proceeding in a suspicious manner.
The police party checked both the vehicles and found 300 bottles of liquor in 25 cardboard boxes in the car and 239 bottles in 20 boxes in the autorickshaw.
The police arrested K. Rajamurugan (44) of Udaiyapatti and R. Ramesh (38) of Mettu street in the city who were smuggling the liquor in the car and auto respectively. Both the vehicles were seized. Inquiry revealed that they were involved marketing liquor, smuggled from Puducherry, in Kichipalayam, Sanniyasikundu and Pachapatti areas in the city.
G. Subbulakshmi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, commended the Ammapettai police party for effecting the seizure.
