MADURAI SIVAKASI NADARS PIONEER MEENAKSHI WOMEN'S COLLEGE
The Hangout: Under guava and gooseberry trees
Rush Hour: During lunch hour
Where it‘s at: Adjacent to main building
What's to love: Inside the 15-acre college premises, this spot is special for two reasons - it is cool and has lot of guava and gooseberry trees.
“Parents prefer this college for it's discipline besides keeping a watch on them even while they are travelling by the college bus,” M. Rajashri.
“Bus facility is another attractive feature,” says A.Sindhuja.
Students are busy attending seminars and association meetings in the college besides presenting papers in inter-college programmes.
“Professors help us to find right books and help us in culling out necessary points,” notes R. Susan Bharathy.
Otherwise the college keeps us busy through the day with ‘major hour' – counselling session and ‘association hour' where students present papers and discuss topics and issues. In fact, the association hour helps students to get rid of stage fear.
“The major hour enables students to discuss problems which they otherwise may not thrash out with parents and friends. It also helps them to find a solution,” R. Prasanna Bala Saraswathi.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Hence students bank more on weekly games hour where girls are allowed to play cricket, volley ball, shuttle, chess and carom.
“In fact, the college has produced many university-level players,” informs B.Usha.
Their game popularly known as ‘occasion friends' keeps them busy and lively. During every festival, students play the game. A week before festival, students draw a lot and select a friend. They sendmessages to their ‘occasion friend' through other friends. They pass on instructions like colour of the attire to be worn, hairstyle to be sported and what questions to be asked in the classroom etc.
“The entire week is filled with loads of fun and on the final day we reveal our identity and share gifts,” says K.S. Muthu.
Sometimes, girls end up talking about cinema mostly heroines' cosmetics and costume. Besides, they also share their opinion about heroes Vijay, Ajith and Surya.
What's not to: Though the college is strict, it allows some freedom too. “They allow us to wear jeans unlike other colleges but a long top and a shawl are mandatory,” says M.Preethi.
The college has imposed a blanket ban on mobile phones and students hate working on Saturdays.
Alternatives: Stair case next to the classroom and cosy classrooms are other hot spots for students to catch up.
