Imagination ran wild and deft strokes of the brush gave it a colourful form on paper. The annual edition of The Hindu Young World Painting Competition held in the city recently announced a few talents whose names were likely to come up in the world of art in the future.
Winners
Jishnu P. Raj of M.G.E.M. Higher Secondary School, Vakathanam, Kottayam, and Fuad Hussain of Kendriya Vidyalaya No:1, Naval Base, Kochi, walked away with the top honours in the competition held for senior and junior categories at the Toc- H Indoor Stadium at Vytilla near here.
Krishna Soman of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Poochatty, and Namitha K.S. of MES Public School, Vemballur, both from Thrissur district, painted themselves to the second and third positions in the senior category.
Among the juniors, Niza Kaladharan of Our Lady of Mercy Higher Secondary School, Aroor, and Akshay P. Sarath of Bhavan's Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, bagged the second and third positions.
Former acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court K. Narayana Kurup, who was the chief guest, handed over the certificates and prizes to the winners. He also administered to the children an oath against the usage of tobacco, alcohol and drugs.
Prizes
Artists T. Kaladharan and Radha Gomati, who were the judges, praised the quality of the competition while adjudicating the winners. Contestants who came in the first three positions in the senior category walked away with cash awards of Rs. 5,000, Rs. 3,000, and Rs. 2,000 respectively.
For winners in the junior category it was Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,000, and Rs. 1,000. All the participants were given certificates. Besides, seven consolation prizes of Rs. 500 each were given away to contestants in both the senior and junior categories.
More than 300 students from Ernakulam, Alapuzha, Idukki, and Thrissur districts participated in the two-hour long competition. Both the seniors (Stds VIII to X) and juniors (Stds VI to VII) were given two topics to choose from. Seniors were asked to paint either “Science Exhibition at your School”, or “Tree Planting Ceremony”, whereas juniors were asked to choose from “A Busy Road” or “Sports Day”.
As Mr. Kaladharan noted later during the prize distribution ceremony, that the topics tree planting and busy road were the favourites. Similarly, green was definitely one of the favourite colours with the majority of the participants.
The official sponsor of the competition was Lotte Caramilk, while Cheetos Whoosh was the snacks sponsor.
