“Short is in,” says celebrity hair stylist Roger Ross, as he snips away at a young girl’s tresses at Green Trends Beauty Salon, Race Course. Armed with his shears, he works on the textures, adds layers, a few asymmetrical cuts and, in a few minutes, the makeover is complete. The girl emerges with a grin obviously pleased with her haircut.

“The textured cut popularised by the 4G girl on TV is the rage now. Actor Jenifer Lopez was one of the first celebrities to introduce the pixie hair cut. Flicks and fringes are back too with actor Priyanka Chopra sporting it in her Hollywood TV series.”

As part of its fourth anniversary, Green Trends offered a free consultation for hair makeover with Roger. Trained under Blossom Kochchar, Roger Ross has been in the industry for 18 years and has been associated with fashion events like Miss Chennai and Miss Bangalore. He has worked with actors Khushboo, Simran, Kamal Haasan and top models. “I don’t do anything funky. I go for an easy cut that my clients can maintain easily at home without having to visit a salon often,” says Roger, who is also the area trainer for hair stylists at Green Trends. “Every one wants to copy the hair styles of movie stars. Those with long hair prefer face-framing fringes, which look short in front but are connected to the back. Hairdos in chocolate and caramel colours are popular too. People are experimenting with new looks. “

When it comes to hair care, Roger says people are often reluctant to try professional treatment. “When you have dry hair, just shampooing or a conditioner won’t do. When the hair is frizzy, brittle, and scanty with breakages, you have to treat it with a deep-conditioning hair spa or GK hair taming treatment to give a smooth and silky look. You hair needs that special care,” he insists.

Akila Karthik, who runs the salon, says, “We educate the client on the need to go in for customised professional products to suit their hair type. Most clients give top priority for hair care and styling. Men are equally concerned too.”

Roger is happy that people in Coimbatore are receptive to suggestions and are willing to experiment. “A woman in her 60s walked in today and she wanted flicks and fringes!” he smiles. A mixed group of youngsters, teenagers and men also turned up for a consultation and makeover. “Men are also influenced by Bollywood stars. Shahid Kapoor’s long beard in Udta Punjab is very popular. There are pixies for men too. And short hair and long beard is the in look for the season. Men go in for beard styling too,” says Roger.

In hair colouring, highlights are fading out, says the expert. “Loud colours are out too. Now, it is layers in two or three shades. Subtle shades of burgundy, violet, walnut brown go well with the Indian skin tone.”

Quick tips

It’s a myth that oil nurtures hair growth. A good oil massage improves blood circulation. Apply oil once a week or one hour before shampooing

Never sleep with any product on hair, especially oil, as dust settles in and leads to dandruff

Shampoo, conditioner and serum are a must. Serum is a must. It works just like sunscreen works for the skin

Don’t wash hair everyday as the hair loses its texture. Wash just thrice a week

If you are gymming, rinse your hair everyday
