Kuravankonam is slowly becoming the new hub for foodies with a lot of new restaurants. Truffles is the latest to join the bandwagon. Truffles is a bistro serving reasonably priced meals in a modest setting, while also being true to its tagline, ‘Diamond of the kitchen’ –serving delectable dishes.

The decor is clean and low on frills, which is very much in sync with the simple, substantial and tasty food they serve. The turquoise blue walls lend a warm, vibrant feel to the entire place and along with the endearing music is a cosy hangout.

Arjun Nair, one of the youngsters behind the venture, quit his job at Infosys to follow his dream of opening a restaurant. “The city hardly has any restaurants where good steaks and shakes are available at a reasonable price,” explains Arjun.

He along with Prem, Shaan and Subbu are also the interior designers of the café, right from the colour of the paint to the hand written menu board. In fact, the quartet run the entire show, from cooking to serving!

The menu is small but varied, with enough choices under salads, burgers, sandwiches, steaks, sizzlers and shakes.

“We want to specialise in the current menu before going for a wide variety and risk compromising on quality,” says Arjun.

I started with the Truffles special grilled chicken salad that had chicken pieces mixed with vegetables in mayonnaise and garnished with olive slices. Enthralled by the salad we proceeded to dig into the club sandwich, which had three layers of beef steak, vegetables, egg and cheese. It felt like biting into layers of unadulterated bliss!

Next in line was the chicken steak with barbeque sauce and it was easily one of the best steaks I have ever had. The portion size was absolutely perfect and the meat was so tender that it just melted in my mouth. I could feel that the steak had been properly rested before it was served. It was well presented, neatly garnished with broccoli, carrot and French fries, arranged around the bright juicy, steak, all of it on top a crunchy lettuce leaf.

The French fries were crispy and the garlic bread was freshly prepared. However, the highlight was easily the in-house barbeque sauce, which was thankfully not salty. “Our speciality is really the special sauce we make for our steaks and in house patties, which we use for our burgers,” chipped in Prem, the ‘main chef’.

We were already full but were unable to refuse the Truffles ecstasy shake, which turned out to be a delightful surprise with bits of freshly cut strawberry in the thick shake.

Seating capacity is currently around 25 people and that seemed to be the only area that needs improvement. The post-its on the wall with customer feedback seemed to sum it up perfectly, “A small world of delicious food!”

Truffles is located at Kuravankonam-Ambalamukku road and is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Contact: 6501555
