Deepika Padukone may have flaunted the tattered denim jumpsuit. But look away from the screen or celebrity pages and it will be obvious that it is not only Deepika who is flaunting frayed denims. This fashion trend of the late 70s and early 80s which Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and the likes flaunted has made a comeback as a fashionably casual style statement. When worn with the right amount of tear, these denims are good enough to land at a party in.

So if your old pair of denims are strategically torn or frayed at the knees and thighs, don’t rush to the tailor for darning, it could get you compliments and envious looks. “Provided it is accessorised well. It is an interesting fabric and its variations are all equally cool. The fabric cannot be over styled but can be teamed well to give a fantastic look. A sequenced top, play of contrast will be good for a casual night out or even for a stylish do. Frayed denims are a style in themselves, but one cannot play around with them too much. The idea of wearing denim is to keep the classic chic look intact,” says designer Archana Rao.

Style also depends on how comfortably one carries oneself in them. One no longer needs those ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) videos tutorials to create the perfect pair of frayed denims as all mass denim brands have them on their shelf. So just pick the one that suits your body.

Frayed denims are available in all denim types and styles like cigarette, straight cut and even boyfriend denims. Choosing the best style according to one’s body shape and height will make the best of the look. “Instead of the plain boring basic denims, one can opt for the frayed denims. I would like to team it with a stylish jacket for a causal evening out. There is no yardstick as to who should or who shouldn’t wear it. Anyone can wear it, depending on the comfort factor,” suggest fashion blogger Pallavi Ruhail.

Style blogs and updates, however, show that frayed denims are beyond trousers. Denim lovers in the West sport frayed jackets, frayed shirts and even dresses, but in India the torn or shred is limited to trousers. “Experimenting with denim is rare. Especially in India, designers have restricted themselves to the wedding market and very few have targeted the utility segment. So experimenting with denims by Indian designers is a long way to go. Frayed denims is a revival trend and for the autumn winter collection, denim is a popular fabric. If one wants to restrict oneself for subtlety, fraying can be limited to hems and maybe knees only,” says Purushu Arie, fashion blogger.
