I have skinny hands and legs but my problem area is my tummy. What kind of cuts and clothes would suit me best?- Deepa

If it’s any solace, you are not alone. That body type is mine too and of over 60 per cent of the women I know.

This is what I do — I wear tops that shape under the bust and loosen out near the lower belly, yet not so loose as to look sloppy. The trick is to balance the shape with your height, bust and hip. A good way is to take a few selfies on your phone and you will figure out what works for you.

For kurtas too, I find a slight shape under the bust gives me enough definition and adds to the image of a thin person. For evening wear, I wear layers. A skinny under layer with a semi-transparent loose over layer like a drape or a kaftan or a poncho showing a bit of my neck and shoulder or slim upper arms works wonderfully.

For times when I like to wear skinny jeans with a shirt tucked in, I have a light, semi-sheer or very thin jersey and front open jackets in neutral shades like deep grey, black and deep khaki. These can be sleeveless or with sleeves. I wear them over a shirt. They not only camouflage the waist area but work as a cover when I move from my hot workshop area to much cooler air-conditioned areas in the office. Instead of carrying a summer shawl, I wear a summer over-layer.

I also have thin but fairly large scarves and shawls in bright colours. They play the dual role of cover up with style.

Thick belts are a definite no. All kinds of chic kaftans in fine fabrics with skinny leggings work. I never wear anything fitted on the tummy without some kind of cover-up.
