Vazhaithandu mor kootu is a healthy and easy-to-make dish which I learnt from my grandmother.

What you need

Banana stem (vazaithandu) – 300 gm

Sour buttermilk - 1 cup

Green chillies - 5-7

Coconut, grated - 1/2 cup

Rock salt – to taste

For the seasoning

Coconut oil – 1 tbsp

Mustard seeds – a few

Curry leaves – a few

Cooking instructions

Cut the vazaithandu into small pieces and soak for ten minutes in water with very little sour curd mixed in it.

Grind coconut, green chillies and curry leaves together into a paste.

In a heavy bottom pan add little water, turmeric and salt. Boil the vazaithandu. Now add the ground paste along with the buttermilk and allow to cook for 15 minutes. Stir regularly.

Add one tbsp of coconut oil and switch off the flame. Add the seasoning to it. Serve hot with vathakuzhambu.
