Muskmelon originated in Persia (Iran), and is so named because of its delightful odour. Just like watermelon, muskmelon has soft flesh and is high on water content. The most popular type of muskmelon in the U.S. is the small, oval, heavily-netted kind, commonly called a cantaloupe. All cantaloupes are muskmelons, but not all muskmelons are cantaloupes. These include smooth-skinned varieties such as honeydew, crenshaw and casaba. Muskmelon can be a great substitute for high-calorie snacks and can aid in healthy weight loss. Since it is rich in potassium, it can help control blood pressure and prevent the risk of stroke. Potassium in the melon can help reduce the problem of kidney stones. Muskmelon consists of dietary fibre, making it good for those with constipation. Muskmelon is a good source of vitamin C, an anti-oxidant. This helps prevent heart diseases and even cancer. It has beta-carotene too. Muskmelon helps in skincare too since it contains Vitamin A.
