A café in the hills

Tucked away from traffic, The Cullinarium in the Nilgiris offers a range of pies, tarts and quiches

Summers in the Nilgiris were some of the happiest times of my childhood. How lucky are we, Coonoor is just a two and a half hour journey by car. An idyllic setting where time seems to stand still and the chirping of birds surpasses the din of traffic. Memories of treks into the sholas, playing badminton at the club and reading books by the fireplace bring an immediate smile to my face. While we all love the Nilgiris of old, it’s also nice to hear of new happenings.

When I first heard about a new bakery that had opened enroute to Ooty, close to the Needle Industries, my first reaction was, ”Why on earth would anyone open a place there?” But praise trickled in for ‘The Cullinarium’, a café that opened in April. I was curious about the location. But when I got there I was amazed at how charming the café looked. It was tucked away from the traffic, and the inside looked modern and inviting at the same time. I loved the beaten copper chimney in the centre and the large glass wall that offered a splendid view of the hills. It’s the ideal pit stop for a hungry traveller.

The café has a cute beverage bar to the side, where it offers varieties of coffee, frothy hot chocolate and tea. Sprigs of mint in glass jam jars, filled with water are dotted here and there to ward off flies and we noticed that they add slices of lemon to hot water while washing their dishes.

Two thumbs up, just for that. Artisan breads, croissants plain and flavoured , flans, tarts ,pies and quiches are up for grabs. The broccoli quiche and the chicken and olive quiche are substantial enough for a meal. They do plan to serve soups and other dishes as well.

There is a small boutique on the side, which has exclusive hand made garments and a few other trinkets. The Cullinarium has generated a terrific response, I hear and I wish them the very best.

The café is open on all days of the week from 10 a.m to 7.30 p.m. To know more call: 04232517293.
