Desirable repetition

October 18, 2011 08:52 pm | Updated 08:52 pm IST - CHENNAI:

If we repeat a point or explain something over and over again, we are asked not to be repetitive; we are asked to use fewer words to convey what we want to say.

But when it comes to saying the Lord's name, there is no such thing as optimal limit. We cannot and should not think there is a finite limit to the number of times we can repeat His name. The only palatable repetitions are the Lord's many names, B. Sundar Kumar said, elaborating on the Lord's many names as seen in Srimad Bhagavatam.

Sages have described the greatness of bhakti and the very repetition of the names of the Lord in Srimad Bhagavatam is evidence of what such bhakti is like.

The Lord is known as Purusha. He resides in every one of us as ‘Antaryami.' He is referred to as Bhagavan, for He is always resplendent. Great men praise Him, and their praise is not like ours, for they seek nothing from Him.

Nothing matters in the world as much as bhakti. In fact, the world itself is insignificant compared with the Lord. Therefore, our thoughts must always be of Him. Even if one does not have time to repeat other names, one should at least repeat the name Hari.

As the Lord is present everywhere, He is called Vasudeva. He is the Antaryami for all jivas. That is also why He is known as Vasudeva.

The Lord is a guru to the whole world or Jagat Guru. He is greater than the universe; as Lord Krishna, He gave us the Bhagavat Gita, in which He guides us as a guru does guide his disciples.

The Lord is a protecter of the righteous and torments those who torment His devotees. Janardhana is the name of the Lord in a temple in Kerala, and it is said that when this deity's right hand touches His mouth, the deluge will be upon us.

As we recite His names, we must keep before our mind's eye His splendorous form, and take in His beauty, from His feet to His head. Praying to Him ensures for us the grace of Goddess Lakshmi too, for She never leaves His chest.

We should repeat His names for liberation from worldly life.
