The Music Academy Madras, has, over eight decades, been fostering and promoting classical music and the performing arts. The Academy's recognition and awards are among the most coveted by young and established artists alike.
In keeping with this tradition, an outstanding musician will be chosen every year for ‘The Indira Sivasailam Endowment Concert' during the Navaratri festival. Mallika Srinivasan, director, TAFE, and daughter of A. Sivasailam, chairman, Amalgamations Ltd., and the late Indira Sivasailam, will sponsor the annual concert beginning 2010.
Selection process
The musician chosen for the recital will be selected jointly by the
Academy and Mallika Srinivasan's family. The artist will be honoured with the ‘Indira Sivasailam Endowment medal.'
Indira Sivasailam was an ardent rasika of Carnatic music and she and her family have been long time patrons of the Academy. During her life time, she was keen on recognising and promoting excellence in Carnatic music and had instituted a generous endowment at the Academy in this regard. Deeply devoted to God, she had a keen interest in Hindu philosophy and Sanskrit literature and many charitable organisations were recipients of her munificence.
Acknowledging the endowment, N. Murali, president, The Music Academy Madras, remarked, “it is a fitting tribute to someone who was so passionate about Carnatic music, a big patron and supporter of The Music Academy over the decades besides being an integral part of our annual music season.”
