Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam’s vocal concert, organised by Pollachi Tamizhisai Sangam, Coimbatore, comprised a rich assortment of Tamil kritis full of lyrical beauty. She began with the varnam, ‘Senthil Vaazh Murugaiah’ in Hamir Kalyani, by her guru T.R. Subramaniam. After propitiating Ganesha with ‘Sri Vaathaapi Ganapathiye’ in Sahana, she rendered ‘Enai Nee Maravadhe’ in Amrithavarshini.
‘Yaen Palli Kondeeraiya’ by Arunachala Kavirayar, followed after an elaborate delineation of Mohanam. However, Vijayalakshmy sang only the first part of the song that was set in Mohanam.
Appropriate choice
The devout viruttam, ‘Oru Tharam Saravanabhava’ in Saveri and Kalyani was very appropriate for the Tiruppugazh, ‘Charana Kamalaalayathai,’ that she presented with a detailed niraval for the lines ‘Aruna Dhala Paadha Padhmam.’ ‘Thaamadhamen Swami’ in Thodi was the crowning glory. The raga made its appearance with all her beauty and Vijayalakshmy rendered the kriti by Papanasam Sivan with due embellishment. ‘Enna Punniyam Seithayo,’ ‘Athuvum Solluvaal,’ ‘Arul Seyya Vendum Aiyaa’ and ‘Paarvai Ondre Podhume’ brought in variety and were well-appreciated by the audience.
Usha Rajagopalan accompanied Vijayalakshmy with involvement and her raga essays were delightful. Shertalai Ananthakrishnan gave excellent rhythmic support.
Despite frequent power failures, the jarring sound of the generator and a sparsely filled hall, the artists gave their best.
