Savita Sreeram (disciple of P.S. Narayanaswami) in her vocal concert, featured at Vanaprastha, Vadavalli, Coimbatore, was a picture of confidence in the presentation of her musical impulses. Her clear ringing voice in rendering ‘Karunimpa’ (Sahana) in two speeds with aplomb was a foretaste of the classicism she had to offer subsequently. ‘Siddhivinayaka’ (Nattai) with swaras was a refreshing delivery.
Savita’s raga alapanas of Mayamalavagowla for the kriti, ‘Deva Deva Kalayamithe’ and Shanmukhapriya for the kriti, ‘Parvathinayakane’ were commendable exercises with gamakas, brigas and karvais well harmonised to confer refinement to the ragas.
Rich in bhavaThe niraval and swaras for the compositions flowing with commendable ease were aesthetically appealing. Rich in bhava ‘Bogendra Sayeenam’ (Kuntalavarali) was a sincere version. The Bhairavi raga delineation for the kriti, ‘Upacharamu’ with all possible phases varying their pace gave a fantastic colour to the picturisation of the raga capturing all the nuances. The thukkadas towards the end exuded sophistication and they were full of feeling and restraint. The concluding Abhang and a lilting thillana in Valachi were enjoyable. Jayaprakash (violin) and Arvind (mridangam) gave commendable support as accompanists.
