I completed postgraduation in Zoology about four years ago. I want to study ornithology. I would like to have details of the Salim Ali Institute.

via email, Bengaluru

Salim Ali Center for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) (estbd. 1990) (www.sacon.in) is Ministry of Forests and Environment aided institute.

Considering the mission of SACON, you have selected the right area and place to ensure a qualitative study.

1. To design and conduct research in Ornithology covering all aspects of biodiversity and natural history

2. To develop and conduct regular courses in Ornithology and natural history for postgraduate and research students, besides short-term orientation programmes

3. To create data bank on India Ornithology and natural history,

4. To disseminate knowledge relating to Ornithology and natural history for the benefit of the community.

You should connect to the Institute and get the details prior to planning for the research programme that you want to embark upon. The contact coordinates: Director, SACON, Moongilpallam, Anaikatty (Post), Coimbatore-641108. Ph: 0422-2203100.

I want to pursue Ph.D. or equivalent fellowship programme in the management domain. I have 20 years of experience. I have scored less than 55% in postgraduation. I am interested in the areas of Information, HRM, Infrastructure and International Business. Please guide me.

You can pursue Ph.D. in Management from any University. It will have an entrance test and other required modalities to get the right candidates for pursuing the Research programme. You will have to check for the availability of Supervisors/Guides in the Department. The percentage for eligibility has been fixed by the Universities and the UGC.

You should check the Fellow Program in Management (FPM) which is a full-time doctoral program that offers researchers opportunities for advanced studies and research in different specialisations related to the science of Management and Business. FPM is offered by the IIMs and a few business schools of repute. FPM makes efforts to prepare students/researchers for careers in teaching and research in Management Studies. Some of the FPM holders land up in the corporate world on account of the exposure that they have.

The title of FPM is recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) as being equivalent to a Ph.D. degree of an accredited university.

You should connect to the IIMs and also take up CAT (Common Admission Test) in order to pursue the FPM.

I am a student of Pre-University in Science. I will complete it in 2016 and I want to become a Physicist. I would like to go through the Engineering curriculum rather than the Bachelor of Science mode of Physics and then pursue postgraduate courses. I am aware that there are no takers for pure science courses. I am confused.

via email, Bengaluru

There are numerous branches of physics and each has its corresponding specialists. The undergraduate curriculum generally includes the following range of courses viz., Theoretical Physics, Astronomy, Electricity, Optics, Quantum Physics, Nuclear Physics and Solid State Physics. At a later stage you can specialise in the areas of Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Molecular Physics, Bio Physics, Chemical Physics, Geo Physics, Material Science, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, and Plasma Physics.

At the engineering level (viz., Bachelor of Technology or Engineering) the Universities do not have programmes that focus on Physics; but have a compulsory paper that will take you through the basics. Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore-560 012, (www.physics.iisc.ernet.in) is a wonderful place to be in for the area of Physics. You can pursue the Integrated program leading to Ph.D. after graduation. The areas of Research are exponential. You can contact the Chairman of the Department on Ph: 2293 2315. Email: chairman@physics.iisc.

Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) (www.jncasr.ac.in) is another place that is worth considering. You should contact The Coordinator, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Jakkur P.O., Bangalore 560064. Email: academic@jncasr.ac.in

Many have considered that the study of pure Sciences has come to halt because of the applied sciences viz., Bio-Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Micro Biology, and other areas of specialisation.

One finds that students like you would help in rekindling the need for Pure Sciences as disciplines whose contribution is farfetched. At this juncture stay focused on the PUC studies and get to the best of understanding. The opportunities in the arena of pure sciences will exist as they are base of the science education. Probe further on your own and get to know the scenario better.
